Devotes from the "Sons of Ghandy" group prepare for the event. In an event that was modeled after the celebrations on the Rio Vermelho in Salvador, Bahia, Cariocas honored Iemanj, the west-African goddess of the sea. The festival praised Brazil's most well-known deity with jongo, afox, samba, and maracatu music and dances, uniting centennial traditions from both communities, Umbanda and Candombl. The event was held in Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro, for the first time, idealized by the musician Marcos Andr. (Photo by Giordanno Brumas / SOPA Images/Sipa USA)
