22 January 1989 - Luxor, Egypt -- The Luxor Temple statue cache was one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the decade, where a grouping of ancient Egyptian statues was unearthed on January 22nd, 1989, during routine maintenance of the temple in a heavily traveled tourist area. They were discovered beneath the solar court of the 18th dynasty Pharaoh Amenhotep III. A partial list of statues: Thutmosis III, Amenhotep III, the goddess Lunyt, Tutankhamun, Horemheb, Amun-Re-Kamutef and the Goddess Tawaret. The excavation was launched in 1989 under the authority of Mohamed El Sogheir. The Luxor cache was buried during the Roman conversion of the area into a military camp. Originally five statues were found at a three foot depth below a covering layer of small stones; eventually 26 statues were uncovered with some being damaged prior to burial. All of the statues are now in the Luxor Museum. Pictured is the site of the discovery in the solar court of the Temple.
