16 April 2024, Laos, Pak Ou: A group of Buddha statues in the Pak Ou Caves. The caves directly on the Mekong are considered one of the most important Buddhist sites in Laos. There are around 6000 Buddha statues of various sizes in two caves. Since the royal family introduced Buddhism as the national religion in the 16th century, believers have made pilgrimages to the caves every year and left Buddha statues there.
