Flanked by Federal President Dr Gustav Heinemann (r, below), IOC president Avery Brundage (USA) speaks, on 6 September 1972 at the Munich Olympic Stadium, during the memorial ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics. "The Games must go on!", he said. Arabian terrorists of the group 'Black September' had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September at the military airport F�rstenfeldbruck fails. The nine hostages, a Munich police officer, and five terrorists lost their lives. The games were interrupted for 34 hours, extended for one day, and finished.
