Following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, NATO bolstered its presence on the Eastern flank of Europe to support allied countries in case the conflict spilled over their borders. In Romania, France leads the forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization under the name of Mission Eagle. On April 17, 2024, a joint artillery firing exercise involving French forces and the Romanian army took place on a military range near the Black Sea and the Danube, a few kilometers from Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. On the Romanian side, 120mm mortars were in action, while on the French side, two CAESAR self-propelled guns fired their 155mm barrels, accompanied by a battery of two 120mm mortars.//TIRATJEANCHRISTIAN_sipa.11852/Credit:Jean-Christian Tirat/SIPA/2404191052
