Every year, on the night between Maundy Thursday and Maundy Friday, residents of the island of Hvar, Croatia and other pilgrims walk almost 25 kilometers to follow the crucifix. The procession Following the Cross is a pious tradition that has lasted for more than 500 years. The most impressive part of the procession takes place at dawn in front of the church itself, when the cross bearer runs the last 50 meters of the course and, in climax, ends his long Way of the Cross on his knees.
