Vaquita (Phocoena sinus) mother and calf surface in the waters off San Felipe, Mexico. World's rarest marine mammal, with an estimated 8 individuals left as of June 2022. Vaquitas, a species of porpoise, become trapped and drown in gillnets fishermen set illegally for Totoaba (Chilean Sea Bass), a fish whose swim bladder is a delicacy in China and sells for thousands of dollars per pound. On the 10th March 2022, after a 40 year prohibition, CITES authorized the export of captive-bred totoaba fish from Mexico, thus increasing the demand for totoaba, and with it the likelihood of this species going extinct., Credit:Paula Olson/NOAA / Avalon
