13 May 2024, Saxony, Peterwitz: A field hamster looks out of a box during its release into the wild. Following the successful breeding of the endangered animals at Leipzig Zoo last year, the first of 71 field hamsters have now been released into the wild. Over the past few months, a farmer has cultivated a field of around 30 hectares in northern Saxony with winter cereals, alfalfa and flower mixtures in strips to make it hamster-friendly.
