16 May 2024, Saxony-Anhalt, Walbeck: A former observation tower of the GDR border troops stands near Walbeck on the former inner-German border. The former observation tower was rebuilt after its illegal demolition with funds from the German Foundation for Monument Protection and tells the story of a time of automatic firing systems and landmine fields. The rebuilt tower is to be preserved as a historical monument. As one of twelve watchtowers of the GDR border troops preserved in Saxony-Anhalt today, the Walbeck Tower is listed as an important historical monument of Germany's recent past. As a memorial and a place of remembrance and culture, it is part of the first all-German nature conservation project "Green Belt", which designates the strip of land between the former West and East German border.
