18 February 2026, Saxony-Anhalt, Halberstadt: View of an altarpiece signed with an elaborate inscription by its master Hans Raphon in 1508. The altarpiece impresses with its narrative program of figures and images. It is considered one of the most expressive works of late Gothic painting in Lower Saxony. In keeping with the traditional rite at Halberstadt Cathedral, all medieval altarpieces in the important church treasury were closed this year. The aim is to take part in the pre-Easter period of Lent. Until Maundy Thursday, visitors to the museum exhibition can experience a form of fasting that is rarely seen in modern interpretations: the renunciation of visual pleasures. Visitors are once again invited to authentically experience Lent in the largest medieval cathedral treasure outside the Vatican. Photo: Matthias Bein/dpa
