Eight citizens who work in Shanghai became the first batch of private owners of electric cars on Wednesday. The eight electric car owners will get up to 60,000 yuan (9,150 U.S. dollars) of subsidy in a pilot project of Shanghai as part of a nationwide campaign to promote new energy vehicles amid rising fuel prices and a growing demand to cut emissions.
