25 September 2022, Brandenburg, Kienitz: On the river Oder at the harbor of Kienitz, people in canoes protest against the expansion of the river Oder on the occasion of the International Rivers Day. Organizers of the canoe protest action are the married couple Steffi and Norbert Bartel, who have been running the nature experience farm Uferloos directly on the Oder in Kienitz (Oderbruch) together since 2005. They want to defend themselves against the further destruction and pollution of the Oder. Especially for this purpose they have founded citizens' initiative "Save Oder Die". Since the beginning of August, tons of dead fish had been recovered from the German-Polish border river. Several hundred chemical substances could be possible contributors to the environmental disaster, but the exact cause is still unclear. The final report of a German-Polish expert group on possible causes should be available by the end of September. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa
