23 April 2024, Brandenburg, Storkow: An osprey (Pandion haliaetus) lands next to a webcam in its eyrie on a power pylon at Groß Schauener See near Storkow in the Oder-Spree district. A webcam has been transmitting images from the osprey's eyrie on a high-voltage pylon for about a month. The osprey returned from the south around the end of March. The webcam was installed last year. It transmits live images of the nest and its inhabitants to the internet and to the local exhibition of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation in Groß Schauen. According to the Heinz Sielmann Foundation, around 700 to 750 breeding pairs of the endangered species are currently living in Germany again. In Europe, the hunting of ospreys and the use of pesticides such as DDT had almost wiped out the osprey by the early 1970s. The species has been protected since 1979. Most ospreys in Germany live and breed in the eastern federal states. Photo: Patrick Pleul/dpa/ZB
