17 April 2024, Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg: The highest-ranking female chimpanzee fishes yoghurt out of a tin with a stick at Magdeburg Zoo. Magdeburg Zoo has rejected accusations that it breaches regulations when keeping chimpanzees. There is no evidence of physical or psychological suffering of the animals. According to the zoo, ten chimpanzees live at Magdeburg Zoo. Some of them have many bald patches in their fur because the animals pluck each other's fur. This behavior, known as grooming, is part of the animals' social behavior. The affected animals have exhibited the behavioral abnormality since their arrival at Magdeburg Zoo in 2014.
