The Unites States Supreme Court on Thursday, June 30, 2022 ruled that the Biden Administration can cancel the Trump-era Remain in Mexico policy also known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) program which required authorities to either jail asylum applicants from Central America or deny them U.S. entry and stay in Mexico until their cases are resolved. MPP was introduced in 2019 during a surge of migration from countries in the Central American region (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador). The policy had been criticized by immigration advocates and activists that those migrants being sent to Mexico to wait for their cases faced a range of dangers, including assault, kidnapping and murder. Reports backed up by human-rights groups and internal Department of Homeland Security confirmed the policies strict conditions. Migrants in Tijuana, Mexico shelters reacted with mix feelings after hearing the Courts decision; those who are still in the MPP program were happy that they could now seek asylum and wait in the U.S. for a decision to their pending cases, while those still waiting for Title 42 (the CDC policy still in the books) to rescind, which did not happen on May 23, would like the chance to seek asylum to the States, as many have been waiting weeks, months and even years for a chance to be able to escape their current situations.
