25 November 2021, Saxony, Chemnitz: Grills secure a window of the former Stasi prison on the Kaßberg in Chemnitz. A former detention wing of the Stasi prison is now being converted into a place of learning and remembrance at a cost of around 3.8 million euros. The new memorial is due to open in autumn 2022 with several exhibitions on the building's double dictatorship history. The focus is on the release of a total of more than 33,000 political prisoners from the GDR by the Federal Republic of Germany between 1963 and 1989. The Kaßberg Prison was the central hub for this and was therefore also seen as a gateway to freedom for many of those affected. Photo: Hendrik Schmidt/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa
