Captured in New Mexico in 2003, this photograph depicts a scene commonly encountered on the plains of the state. Here you can see a prairie dog, which is a member of the Cynomys genus, frolicking around its safe underground burrow. In June 2003, monkeypox was reported in several people in the United States. Most of these people fell ill after coming into contact with pet prairie dogs who were sick with the virus. This was the first outbreak of monkeypox in the United States. CDC/Susy Mercado, 2003
