A protester sits at a pro-Palestine encampment at the City College of New York. Pro-Palestine demonstrators rallied in a courtyard in the City College of New York in Manhattan, New York City condemning the Israel Defense Forces' military operations in Gaza. Since Thursday morning, students and pro-Palestine activists at City College have held a sit-in protest on campus, forming a "Gaza Solidarity Encampment." The City College encampment follows a similar encampment that began in Columbia University in New York City last week. Encampments have been forming in other universities in New York City including in the Fashion Institute of Technology, as well as in campuses nationwide in support of Palestine. There has been increasing tension between the student protesters and university administrations regarding the use of law enforcement to remove the encampments. Since the war started on October 7, 2023, Gaza's health ministry said more than 34,000 people have been killed in Gaza, a territory ruled by Hamas.
