26 April 2024, Saxony-Anhalt, Wolferstedt: The Autobahn 38 winds its way through the landscape of the Mansfeld-Südharz district between the slag heaps of the former copper mine. Between 2020 and 2040, the population in Mansfeld-Südharz is forecast to shrink by 21.1 percent. Similar forecasts are made for the other eastern German states. At the same time, the proportion of older people is increasing. The districts are doing their utmost to combat this. (Aerial view with drone) Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa
