George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Irish dramatist, critic and Fabian, 1893. The author of such well known works as Pygmalion and Saint Joan, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1925. A committed socialist, he also wrote numerous pamphlets on social and political issues, many of them published by the Fabian society. From The Cabinet Portrait Gallery, fourth series, Cassell and Company Limited (London, Paris and Melbourne, 1893).
