25 January 2023, Saxony, Gelenau: Ines Buchhold maneuvers her packhorse through a section of forest near Gelenau in the Ore Mountains. Sachsenforst relies on animal helpers for timber harvesting. Ten to twelve so-called horse-pullers are used by the state enterprise. The horses used in the forest to move timber complement special heavy timber harvesting machines such as harvesters and forwarders in difficult terrain. Forest management with horses is considered to be particularly gentle on the soil. Cold-blooded horses are also used for tillage to seed new trees such as silver fir. The potential for the use of horses at Sachsenforst was currently stated at around 50,000 solid cubic meters for advancing, as well as 120 hectares of seed area and around 30 hectares for land preparation.
