Suez Canal, Egypt - 7 July 2021 - The huge container ship Ever Given that blocked the Suez Canal in March 2021 is free at last and enroute to Rotterdam after a compensation agreement was made between the Suez Canal Authority and Shoei Kisen Kaisha, the Japanese ship owners. The SCA head Osama Rabie declared, "I announce to the world that we have reached a deal." The Ever Given was freed from blockage in a salvage operation that lasted 6 days, however in that short amount of time it created a traffic jam backlog of 420 ships at the chokepoint in just the first 4 days. The Ever Given with thousands of containers aboard in the intense heat of the sun, has been detained by the Egyptian authorities for 3 months due to compensation demands from the ships owners.
