A Jewish boy stands next to the fire for burning the leaven before the Passover. Religious Jews are fulfilling the obligation to inspect the house for any leaven and eliminate it before the night of Passover. In the ultra-orthodox cities in Israel, fires are set up in major locations in the city for this purpose. People bring their bread leftovers, often men along with their children, to burn the leaven. During the 7 days of Passover, it is prohibited to eat or possess any leaven, as a symbol to the dough of the Israelites that did not have time to rise before the Exodus from Egypt.
