BROOKLYN, NY / ACCESSWIRE / November 24, 2022 / Contemporary art gallery The Bishop, located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, has opened a unique artist residency program which provides a free living and working space, supplies, materials, and other resources to selected artists.

The idea for the residency program was initiated back in 2020, as the gallery worked to provide emergency support for a variety of artists who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This relief effort brought to light the fact that many upcoming and emerging artists were negatively affected by economic circumstances and that their art was suffering because of it.

This led to the gallery creating its novel residency program, where it selects artists based on a variety of different aspects, such as need, type of artist, and current works in progress. A spokesperson for the Bishop stated, "This new project is near and dear to the gallery's aim of always supporting living artists. Post pandemic, the Bishop Gallery continues its journey to bring world-class art and artists to Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn in a way that's illuminating, entertaining, and most importantly, accessible."

The new residency program has been launched in concert with the Bishop starting a novel art tour at Historically Black Colleges/ Universities (HBCUs). The featured exhibit, entitled "Our Friend, Jean", is a showcase of early works by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). The tour has made stops at Hampton University, Howard University, Clark Atlanta University, and Tennessee State University, and is currently on view at Dillard University in New Orleans. The last stop will be at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. The Bishop has partnered with sponsors Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Hennessy for the tour.

The Bishop Gallery, launched in 2012 by Erwin John and Stevenson Dunn, Jr., provides both emerging and established artists with a platform to connect with a worldwide audience while highlighting the historic Brooklyn art scene. "We have a history of embracing diverse cultures, genres of art, artists' backgrounds, and different means of artistic expression," says Erwin John. "In doing so, we have been privileged to forge lasting relationships with our artists and our local community." Photo courtesy of Alexis Adler

The Bishop Gallery strategically uses art as a catalyst for bringing together communities and inciting conversations of change and development. The Bishop Gallery has locations in Brooklyn and Baltimore, and for the past decade has produced a plethora of exhibitions along with exhibiting hundreds of artists from around the globe.

In 2019, The Bishop Gallery became the first gallery outside of the Brooklyn Museum to show a solo exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat, in his hometown of Brooklyn. This exhibition went on to show at Art Basel 2021 and is now on the aforementioned HBCU tour, which is exciting to the gallery's entire team, as it is also looking into opening several new galleries, both nationally and internationally.

"Being able to have a measurable impact on our peers, community and society at large is what success looks like for us," says John. "The Bishop is an offspring of the Lamont Bishop Gallery in Washington DC. We are always growing and learning. Our experiences helping artists during the pandemic really illuminated a growing need, which is why we're so pleased to offer our residency program. We would like to be in the position to expand it within the next 2 years."
